Appearance

Aila is a fair-skinned female wild elf with red hair. She wields a warhammer called The Howling Tempest, previously The Howling Gale. The character's design is heavily influenced by Scottish and viking culture to reflect the Wild Elves' heritage as well as Katie's.

Sometime prior to Episode 1, the colour of Aila's eyes changed after she developed a certain power though she does not understand why it happened.[4]

Aila lets electricity crackle up and down her body when she's angry or attempting to intimidate someone.

Personality

Aila is fairly gruff and solitary, usually not engaging in much conversation. A major driving force for her is to learn the origins of her real clan (since she was adopted by another). She can be short-tempered and bitterly sarcastic when facing prejudice in cities where Wild Elves are looked on with suspicion.[5]

History

Aila was raised between two Wild Elven clans though they are not her native clan. Neither clans also knew where she came from. Her roots of being a Storm Herald barbarian is also considered a myth. As such, Aila ventures out to find out what her powers means.[4]

As the story has progressed Aila has had visions and flashes of memories, one of the visions that we were told of was of her on another planet as Starbane's forces appeared. She has also discovered she is from a now-destroyed planet called Alfheim. [6]

Relationships

Nova - Aila adventures with Nova and is considers Nova a friend. However, when given the option to catch Nova or Sentry when they leaped and chose Sentry. Kim said that Nova assumed that Aila knew that Nova could cast levitate, which Katie did know, but Aila didn't and Katie didn't take it into consideration as to not metagame. This has not been talked about in-game due to the craziness that came from the following sessions.

Proficiencies;

Skills;

  • Athletics - presumably obtained from theOutlander background
  • Intimidation - Presumably obtained from the Barbarian proficiency choices
  • Nature - Presumably obtained from the Barbarian proficiency choices
  • Perception - As an elf, Aila gains proficiency with the perception skill.
  • Survival - Presumably obtained from the Outlander background

Languages;

  • Common - All base races gain this language, Aila is no different.
  • Dwarvish - Aila gains this language from the Outlander background.
  • Elvish - Aila gains this language from her Wild elf race. (This race is statistically the same as the Wood Elf from the player's Handbook)

(In addition, Aila has proficiency in most armour and weapons minus firearms and any armour that isn't from the base armour types. She also has proficiency with bagpipes)

Abilities;

Storm Aura - When Aila enters a rage and every turn she chooses to after, she can cause lightning to strike one creature within 10 feet. This creature must make a Dexterity saving throw (With a DC of 8+proficiency+constitution modifier) or take damage which increases based on level.[7] Shielding Storm - While within her storm aura, each creature of Aila's choice gains resistance to lightning damage. Relentless Rage - When Aila hits 0 hitpoints while she's raging, she can make a constitution saving throw with a DC of 10 to instead fall to 1 hitpoint. Every time this feature is used the DC increases by 5, resetting after a short or long rest.

Notable Items;

The Howling Gale - A treasure of her clan, the Howling Gale is an oversized warhammer that Aila has carried since before the start of the campaign. However, it has been broken and drained of the majority of its powers. Its head crackles with lightning when Aila activates her Storm Herald rage, and it can be used to cast the Gust cantrip at will.

After restarting the Midwife's forge, it is upgraded to The Howling Tempest, and was revealed that it was a standard weapon carried by elvish forces against Kalus Starbane. It gained a +1 to attack and damage rolls, and also gained the ability to be thrown at a target (damaging all creatures between Aila and the target, like a Javelin of Lightning) then returning to her hand.

The Howling tempest was upgraded so that while wielding it, Aila can triple her jump distance she can normally jump, for that turn she may exceed her movement speed by doing this. In addition to this upgrade, Aila can now cast the Gust of Wind spell with a DC of 13.

Lightning Cable Launcher - Starbane technology that was taken by the Aerois crew. The Lightning cable Launcher has a power crystal that grants it 30 charges. Each shot taken expends a charge and a creature can be targeted by this item as an attack, on a hit that creature is grappled with an escape DC equal to 8+User's proficiency+user's strength. Each round the target is grappled it takes 1d10 lightning damage until the creature is no longer grappled and the user cannot use this attack against any other creature. Chord Crystal of Alacrity - Similar to the Ioun stones, or assumedly based off of them, this Chord increases the attuned's dexterity score by 2 to a maximum of 20. This is currently why Aila's dexterity is 20. Ring of free movement - While attuned to this ring, Difficult terrain doesn't cost Aila extra movement. In addition, Aila can't have her speed reduced nor be paralyzed or restrained via magic.

Trivia

  • Aila was revealed in Day 3 video of the 10 Days of Aerois series to the start off the Aerois campaign.[4]
  • Aila has a shield in her inventory, but chooses not to use it in favour of using her Warhammers Versatile property. [8]
  • Aila chose to catch Sentry rather than Nova in Episode 25 "Into the fire" when they both failed their saves, the effect this had on their relationship is unknown. However, it doesn't seem to have had a longlasting effect. [9]
  • Katie very rarely uses the barbarian feature Reckless attack. But whenever Mark must fill in for Katie, he uses it as much as he safely can. This shows two different ways people use the barbarian's class features.
  • Mark has said that Elves from Aerois can live for only 100 years (Roughly the same age as humans) whereas they are normally able to live around 750 years in the Player's Handbook. As Aila is an elf from Alfheim, this may mean that she has the capabilities of living upwards of 750 years, though this is unlikely.
