Outlast is a survival horror game developed and published by Red Barrels. The main game puts the player in the perspective of Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist following an anonymous tip calling Upshur to investigate Mount Massive Asylum, in which the Murkoff Corporation has been conducting numerous inhumane and horrifying experiments on the asylum's inmates for profit, experiments that Murkoff hides under the guise of charitable work. In the game, Upshur is trapped inside the asylum and must find a way out, while recording and documenting what he finds for his investigation. The player must explore the asylum and escape the grasps of numerous inmates while simultaneously uncovering the experiments that Murkoff had been conducting for Project Walrider, a pursuit to create the ideal creature via nanotechnology. Throughout the game, the player uses a video camera to see, and must use up batteries to use the camera's night vision function in the dark.
Red Barrels eventually released a DLC for the game called Outlast: Whistleblower, which serves as an overlapping prequel to the main game. In the DLC, the player controls Waylon Park, a software engineer for the Murkoff Corporation and the anonymous tipster that contacted Upshur to investigate the asylum. Waylon's journey through the asylum also plays out after the disaster that set the inmates loose throughout the building and coincides with Upshur's journey in the main game.
